Beautiful Space, More Comfortable Living

How to Make Your Bedroom Feel More Like a Hotel (2025)

How to Make Your Bedroom Feel More Like a Hotel (2025)

When it comes to getting a good night’s rest, there are few slumbers as sweet as when you’re sleeping in a hotel. From plush pillows to custom robes, the subtle details you’ll find in these homes away from home are designed to evoke a calm respite just for you. One way to mirror this experience while circumventing the commodity of traveling is by styling your bedroom like a hotel room.

Through the strategic placement of lighting and furniture—like wall sconces and nightstands—as well as traditional bedding like percale sheets, you can infuse the soothing aesthetic hotels are known for while getting the rest you deserve every night. Plus prioritizing your own sense of style through table books and art can complete the space in boutique fashion. Here, we talked to AD PRO Directory designers about what it takes to make your bedroom feel like a high-end hotel getaway every time you enter your home. If you’re looking into your next staycation, consider this guide your wake-up call.

Dress your bed with percale sheets

Aside from hotel bedding mainstays like fluffy comforters, one of the signature elements of a hotel room is a percale sheet set. Similar to the look and feel of a well-pressed dress shirt, these bed sheets are defined by their refined design. Atlanta-based designer Leah Alexander, founder of the Beauty Is Abundant, recommends any set above a 200 thread count for greater durability. “These traditional woven sheets are great for hotels—and your bed—due to their crispness and breezy breathability,” she adds.

While percale comes in many different color variations, prints, and patterns, there are plenty of options that can align with your taste. “We love to use linen percale sheets with our clients because, texturally, they evoke a feeling of vacay and they’re breathable, which helps them last from season to season for those who are finicky about overheating while sleeping,” says Staver Gray of New York–based design duo Ward + Gray.

Add ambient lighting

Lighting is another essential part of the equation that can make or break a bedroom; really, any room in your home. This is why heavily investing in timeless styles can add maximum versatility to any space. Consider starting with wall-mounted sconces for adjustable bedside lighting. “Putting lights on a dimmer allows you to have nice low light and comfortable warm low light for peaceful sleeping,” Christie Ward, the other half of design firm Ward + Gray, adds.

Although sconces can feel a bit dated, the right variation will introduce a sense of romance and elegance to any aesthetic. “Even adding a mini chandelier can instantly make a room feel more elevated and luxurious,” Gray says. As Alexander notes, the lights in the bedroom should all work together to create a sense of harmony: “Including three light sources—bedside/per side, overhead lighting, and overall ambient lighting in the form of lamps, toe-kicks, closet lighting, and backlit headboards—can make a difference.”

Select the mattress to meet your specific needs

Mattresses are the pièce de résistance of any bedroom, and hybrid models are the most common you’ll find in a hotel, due to their soft and supportive build. However, the mattress type you ultimately choose is up to you. “Buying a mattress is a specific, personal choice,” says Alexander. While “selecting a cozy mattress topper or a stylish duvet can conceal unsightly mattress lines, picking out a mattress is a specific process, one that can impede your sleeping habits. Who wants that?” Whether you’re a side sleeper who craves a soft mattress or you lean more towards bouncy innersprings, selecting the correct one for your needs will help you sleep soundly.

Incorporate furniture with clean lines

The furniture within a nice hotel room is part of the reason you get away in the first place. For starters, select a statement bed frame. “Oversized, upholstered headboards exude luxury and provide the perfect support when laying back and watching TV,” Alexander says. From there, she recommends building out the bedroom furniture with a storage-friendly nightstand to keep your phone within arm’s reach and the space clutter-free overall.

Editing your room is important, too, which ensures it feels open and not cramped. “When furnishing your bedroom, living by the expression ‘less is more’ is the pinnacle of ensuring order and cleanliness—two things everyone loves about hotels,” Alexander notes.

Put your decor spin on it

When it comes to hotel stays, the importance is in the details. “Pattern trays or solid color takes, on top of dressers, are key to [having] chic ways to put things away and collect items—like candles, your wallet, or phone in a contained space,” says Ward, adding that a light silk robe with an eccentric print can add beauty to a room and double as decor.

Whether you’re an avid reader or an architecture enthusiast, consider adding small items to your bedroom to showcase your personality. “I love beautiful books, custom art, and interesting statues—make additions that are unexpected and creative,” Alexander says. Making sure your bedroom feels fine-tuned and well-curated is a labor of love, but don’t overthink your vibe. “Textiles, duvets, and rugs sometimes pull rooms together by using contrasting color palettes, and [they] can help create interesting dynamics,” Ward adds.
